Achieving IS v1.2 Dis-3 Vibration Credits: How SiteHive Can Help

,

When not properly managed, vibration can lead to several issues:

  • Structural damage: Excessive vibration can cause damage to nearby buildings, especially older or more sensitive structures.
  • Disruption or harm to workers, residents and businesses: Vibrations from construction work, particularly heavy machinery and pile driving, can cause discomfort to people living or working nearby. Vibration can impact communities significantly and, in severe cases, lead to psychological effects or hearing damage.
  • Regulatory non-compliance: Many local regulations and standards require vibration monitoring, making compliance a legal obligation for contractors.

For construction projects, managing vibration is both an environmental and social responsibility, and a regulatory requirement. By addressing the potential for excessive vibrations, the credit supports projects in fostering a more sustainable, resilient and harmonious built environment.

The IS v1.2 rating tool is designed to assess and encourage sustainable practices in infrastructure projects, including construction, operation, and maintenance. The Dis-3 Vibration credit specifically focuses on managing the environmental impact of vibration.

The intent of the Dis-3 Vibration credit is primarily to manage vibration impacts to maintain human comfort and prevent structural damage to buildings and other structures. The credit covers both construction and operation.

To achieve the IS ratings, projects must provide evidence that they meet the required standards. SiteHive Enviro software makes this easier as it provides a comprehensive system of record that can be interrogated, reported on, and even shared with external parties.

With SiteHive Enviro you can:

  • Generate summary and detailed reports easily: You can create a range of reports to meet your needs. For example, one-page summary PDF reports of key noise metrics can be produced with one click and can be shared easily as required. The reports can include weather data alongside your monitored data. Using SiteHive Enviro Pro, you can also customise your reports to provide the timing, data and metrics required to demonstrate compliance with vibration goals. Reports can be used to show ongoing monitoring as well as any specific monitoring conducted in response to complaints.
  • Keep a complete record: SiteHive Enviro provides a complete system of record so you always have comprehensive information, including real-time data on Vibration Dose Values (VDV). This provides evidence to demonstrate compliance and mitigation measures. You are able to add in ad hoc or additional information through the Daily Notes feature. For example, this can be used to record mitigation measures taken, explain specific situations, or add any other relevant information.
  • Share information with stakeholders and communities: the Stakeholder View in SiteHive Enviro Pro allows you to share information by providing a curated view of activities to stakeholders, external teams, clients, communities, contractors, the public, or anyone you choose. It can be used to provide information in response to complaints, and is an excellent and easy way to be transparent and build community trust. You can provide customised and summary views of monitoring data to address specific concerns.

At Level 1, achieving the Dis-3 Vibration credit involves identifying and implementing measures to mitigate vibration during both construction and operational phases, and then appropriate monitoring.

Measures to mitigate vibration during construction and operation have been identified and implemented.

The vibration measures and goals are generally set through an impact assessment or similar process, including establishing baselines and predicting likely vibration levels. Goals are usually based around two key parameters:

  • Maintaining human comfort; and
  • Avoiding damage to buildings and structures.

There are often multiple goals based on different times of the day; in relation to the type of receptor; and based on the activities being conducted. Which means that having effective, thorough and time-based monitoring is vital.

SiteHive Hexanode Vibration devices can be used to establish baseline data and identify any potential issues or locations. They can be deployed quickly and easily, and require no expertise to set up. Once placed on site they are fully automated, delivering real-time vibration data immediately. They provide data on human comfort (VDV), structural damage (PPV) and ground-borne noise (Leq).

The devices can be moved easily at any time to address specific sensitive receivers and locations, and all data is recorded based on the monitoring point, so the same device can be easily used in multiple locations over short time periods.

Once the measures and goals have been set, SiteHive devices and software can also then help the process management process in areas including:

  • Keeping a clear record of control measures: The Daily Notes feature in SiteHive Enviro makes it easy to log vibration mitigation measures used on-site and evaluate how effective they are.
  • Generate clear reports: SiteHive Enviro software includes comprehensive reporting features that enable you to produce PDF reports and showcase key stats and trends over time to show your site meets the defined noise goals.
Monitoring of vibration is undertaken at appropriate intervals and in response to complaints during construction

Effective and responsive monitoring is key here. SiteHive’s real-time vibration monitoring tools can significantly assist in this process:

  • Real-time vibration data: SiteHive Hexanode Vibration devices provide live data on vibration levels 24/7, covering structural damage, human comfort and ground-borne noise.
  • Compliance to standards: For each of the three vibration types, the devices provide data in line with the industry standards: structural damage PPV (DIN 4150-3, BS 7385-2);  human comfort VDV (DIN 4150-2, BS 6472); and ground-borne noise (Leq).
  • Easy to use and deploy anywhere: SiteHive Hexanode devices are small and robust, so they are practical to use anywhere. They can be placed in multiple orientations, and can be used in soft ground, hard ground, and attached to walls – including sensitive heritage structures.

The devices make it cost-effective to monitor vibration levels 24/7, and they can easily be moved or placed quickly in response to any complaints. The software means all the appropriate data is on hand for mitigation measures, compliance reporting and complaint management. For example:

  • Comprehensive vibration records: SiteHive Enviro software provides a detailed historical record of vibration data, which can be used for reporting and ongoing operational assessments.
  • Detailed analysis and reporting: SiteHive Enviro allows project teams to generate summary and detailed reports that show vibration trends over time, demonstrating the effectiveness of mitigation strategies and helping to meet regulatory compliance. For example, summary statistics for peak velocities and vibration dose values are calculated instantly; frequency-based impacts are graphed and analysed to identify project risk; and noise levels caused by vibration transferred through structures are calculated automatically.
  • Mitigation strategies: The system provides actionable insights, allowing teams to adjust their activities or employ additional mitigation measures such as dampening, vibration isolation, or equipment modifications.

SiteHive Enviro Pro also includes a range of features that are great for dealing with, and responding to, complaints.

  • Real-time data sharing: The Stakeholder View feature in SiteHive Enviro Pro allows projects to share a curated view of live vibration data. It’s a really easy, time-saving way to provide transparency and ensure everyone is informed. Once the view is set up based on the information you want to show, it’s self-serve – so it literally takes no time. For more details see this blog article on using real-time monitoring to proactively manage site impacts.
  • Track stakeholder feedback: Any concerns or feedback from stakeholders can be recorded in SiteHive Enviro so that they can be addressed promptly. The system provides comprehensive information so that any exceedances can be identified and explained to stakeholders.
  • Summary reports: With one click, SiteHive Enviro produces elegant and easy-to-understand reports that can be shared with stakeholders in PDF format, which makes it easy to keep stakeholders informed.

Level 2 covers both construction and operational phases, and focuses on demonstrating appropriate levels of vibration for structural damage (during construction) and human comfort (during operation). The three elements that must be achieved are:

  1. For construction, modelling and monitoring demonstrates no exceedances of vibration goals for structural damage to buildings and structures
  2. For operation, modelling demonstrates no major or recurring exceedances of vibration goals for human comfort criteria
  3. No physical damage has been caused to any buildings or structures by vibration caused by construction
1. For construction, modelling and monitoring demonstrates no exceedances of vibration goals for structural damage to buildings and structures.

Achieving this element requires regular monitoring to ensure no exceedances of vibration goals. SiteHive devices can be used to continuously track vibration levels, allowing project teams to address any issues as soon as they arise. In addition, software features enable exceedances to be proactively managed to within the appropriate goals.

  • Monitor vibration at sensitive receptors: SiteHive Hexanode Vibration devices are very small and can be located in several different orientations (horizontal, vertical, angled, etc) and situations (in hard or soft ground, or on walls.) This means they can be placed on or near sensitive receptors such as heritage structures, residences, schools, or hospitals, ensuring real-time feedback when vibration levels approach or exceed regulatory thresholds.
  • Real-time insights: Live data and immediate analysis within the software allows teams to make better, faster decisions to mitigate or address issues.
  • Prevent exceedances: SiteHive Enviro provides automatic alerts, via sms or email, based on customisable thresholds and rules. By setting custom thresholds and receiving instant alerts, project teams can take immediate corrective actions to prevent excessive vibration.
  • Weather conditions: Forecast and actual weather conditions are shown in SiteHive Enviro Pro alongside vibration monitoring data, which allows teams to be aware of any potential weather events that may impact monitoring.
2. For operation, modelling demonstrates no major or recurring exceedances of vibration goals for human comfort criteria.

Real-time monitoring, analysis, and alerts continue to be important here. By monitoring sensitive receptors continuously and taking proactive action as required based on analysis and alerts, project teams can meet the human comfort criteria. SiteHive can also provide baseline and construction data that can be used for accurate modelling.

SiteHive solutions provide automated analysis and visualisation of data so that project teams can see what’s happening in real-time including:

  • Summary statistics for peak velocities and vibration dose values are calculated instantly, providing essential data for vibration analyses.
  • Advanced vibration sensors provide precise frequency analysis. Frequency-based impacts are graphed and analysed to identify project risks.
  • Noise levels caused by vibration transferred through structures are calculated automatically. So the actual impact of activities can be measured and accurately assessed for structural impact and potential work harm.
  • Visual summaries of waveform events can be used to explore events in detail in line with the DIN-4150:3 standard. Waveforms can also be explained in SiteHive Enviro to provide a full system of record.

Level 3 requires that there are NO goal exceedances for human comfort criteria during operation. It’s all about preparation and quality practice to be perfect!

For operation, modelling demonstrates no exceedances of vibration goals for human comfort criteria

SiteHive Enviro enables smooth transitions into the operational phase by providing a complete record of vibration data throughout the project lifecycle. Key tools include:
