What is the Powerhouse Design Award?
The Powerhouse Design Award is an annual award given to a design that:
“…has the potential to make a significant improvement to the quality of health, wellbeing or the environment. It recognises the important role of design in harnessing the challenges of science and technology to make a positive impact on our lives.“
The criteria include good design, innovation, and the significance of a design to Australia’s culture.
Powerhouse is the largest museum group in Australia and an important part of Australian culture. It encompasses arts, design, science and technology, and plays a critical role in engaging communities with contemporary ideas and issues.
Powerhouse has recognised great Australian design through the awards since 1992, and the Powerhouse Design Award is presented as part of the Good Design Australia Awards.
Why environmental monitoring is a design challenge
In today’s urban environment, building and development is everywhere – from transport infrastructure to public amenities to homes, schools and offices. These projects are needed, yet the actual development of them can bring disruption and significant impacts for local communities and the environment.
The next-generation SiteHive Hexanodes bring together innovative ideas, customer input and thoughtful design to allow the proactive management of environmental impacts during construction and operation. The devices allow construction and operational teams to see and understand environmental impacts immediately, allowing them to reduce harm to ecosystems, work teams and surrounding communities.
SiteHive co-founder Ben Cooper-Woolley said that the Powerhouse Design Award reflects what the team set out to achieve.
“It is a real honour to be recognised with the Powerhouse Design Award. We design and build SiteHive Hexanodes so that environmental data like noise, dust and vibration is clear, available in real time, and actionable. The devices operate as a project’s “eyes and ears” on site, continuously delivering information. With them, work teams can act quickly to reduce impacts, and neighbouring communities can see that impacts are being managed.”

What is the SiteHive Hexanode family of devices?
SiteHive Hexanodes are a modular system of environmental monitoring devices that are compact, durable and designed for rapid deployment. The family includes SiteHive Hexanode Noise, SiteHive Hexanode Dust, SiteHive Hexanode Vibration, and SiteHive Hexanode Weather, as well as two combined devices: SiteHive Hexanode Noise+Dust and SiteHive Hexanode Weather+Dust.
Together with SiteHive Enviro software, they provide real-time data, alerts and reporting from a single platform. See all SiteHive Hexanode devices, or read the original launch story, Next generation SiteHive Hexanodes are here.
Designed in Australia, shaped by the people who use it
SiteHive Hexanodes are innovative environmental monitoring devices that draw on more than five years of research, on-site experience and continual feedback from users. The designs evolved through iterative prototyping and field validation, with SiteHive working alongside design and engineering partners Xentronics and DeepDish.
The devices are supported by an all-local supply chain, including CNS Precision Assembly, and their modular, repairable construction allows them to be upgraded and re-used from project to project, reducing waste and obsolescence.
The devices were also recognised as Best in Class at the 2026 Good Design Awards. Read the full story in SiteHive Hexanodes win Best in Class at the 2026 Australian Good Design Awards.
SiteHive co-founder Adam Ferguson said the result belongs to many people. “These devices are designed in Australia and shaped by years of feedback from the teams using them on sites. This award belongs to everyone who helped along the way, including our customers, our team, and our design partners.”
