Kamay Ferry Wharves: Protecting Local Residents and Stakeholders

Implementing SiteHive real-time environmental monitoring devices and software allowed McConnell Dowell to protect important cultural heritage sites and the rich marine ecosystem of Botany Bay during the development of two new ferry wharves.

Develop two new ferry wharves while protecting a sensitive, culturally rich and populated environment.

McConnell Dowell led the construction of the Kamay Ferry Wharves, a significant infrastructure project at Botany Bay in New South Wales. The project involved the development of two ferry wharves — one at La Perouse and the other at Kurnell — situated on either side of the bay. This vital project was designed to enhance transport links and accessibility across the bay, while maintaining a strong focus on environmental stewardship and community engagement.

The project site is located in a highly sensitive area, rich in both marine ecosystems and cultural heritage. This presented several challenges for the team as they sought to:

  • Preserve cultural heritage: protecting both Aboriginal and non-Aboriginal heritage sites.
  • Protect the overall marine ecosystem: ensuring construction activities did not disturb local marine life.
  • Minimise community impact: ensuring minimal disruption to local communities and businesses.

A particularly sensitive concern was the Captain Cook Monument at Kurnell, which required special attention due to its historical significance and susceptibility to vibration impacts during construction.

McConnell Dowell partnered with SiteHive to implement a comprehensive real-time environmental monitoring solution that included dust, noise and vibration management. They used the latest vibration technology to ensure important cultural sites were protected throughout.

A combination of SiteHive Hexanode real-time monitoring devices and cloud-based SiteHive Enviro management software enabled the team to proactively manage the project and minimise its environmental impact.

  • Vibration: The team implemented SiteHive Hexanode Vibration monitors at sensitive sites, including the Captain Cook Monument, to track vibration levels, using real-time data to assess and mitigate impacts.
  • Air quality and noise: Deploying SiteHive Hexanode Multi sensors at La Perouse allowed the project team to measure both noise and dust in a single device, and ensure construction activities did not affect local air quality or noise levels.

Access to real-time data minimises environmental impacts

Replacing outdated analog systems with SiteHive’s digital platform provided immediate access to rich environmental data, including images and audio as well as continuous data on vibration, dust and noise levels. This approach allowed for proactive adjustments to construction methods, ensuring compliance with environmental standards and keeping cultural sites safe.

Proactive team collaboration protected communities and the environment

The SiteHive Enviro Pro system allowed McConnell Dowell’s environmental, communications, and stakeholder teams to work closely together and act on the real-time data. Their integrated approach provided transparency for community stakeholders, improving community relations and minimising complaints.

Efficient project management

Immediate access to data allowed for swift responses to potential issues, keeping the project on schedule. With all information in one place in the SiteHive Enviro Pro system, accessible from anywhere, the project saved time and effort, and could respond to issues more effectively.

Monitoring where its needed

The SiteHive Hexanode devices are small, highly portable and can be deployed easily in almost any location. This allowed the team to use devices whenever and wherever they were needed to protect specific heritage areas and structures.

Team collaboration made easy

SiteHive is really easy for the team on site. They can manage all their impacts in real time by putting small, compact monitoring devices where the works are happening.
